On a rise in Searsmont, Maine, looking down over a field and the pond beyond it. Clear cedar shingles under a black standing seam roof, black-framed Marvin windows, and a deep overhang sheltering the door — the whole building set to face the view.
Eight by twenty, and longer than most of our builds for a reason. A four-foot covered porch at the door, a seven-by-seven hot room at the far end, and between them a changing room sized as a yoga room — somewhere to stretch and practice that's already warm before the heat, with the field out the glass while you do.
The hot room runs a HUUM HIVE Mini with Wi-Fi control, so the sauna can be heating while you're still walking down. From the bench, the window frames the field and the pond below — the outlook is the point of the siting, and the glass is placed to hand it to you sitting down.
Inside, thermo-aspen on the walls and ceiling, with the bench corner eased in a curve rather than butted square. Underfoot, cedar decking laid as the floor — water drains through instead of pooling. Outside, the cedar shingles are left to weather; every winter they go a little more silver against the black roof.
