Eight by twelve feet of vertical cedar under a standing seam metal roof, set at the back of a Connecticut lawn. There is power at the house. The owner didn't want it out here. Solar panels carry the lighting, the heat comes from wood, and nothing about this sauna depends on the grid — not for lack of one, but because that was the point.
Twelve feet divided into two rooms: a changing room with hooks and a bench, then the door through into the heat. Somewhere to leave your coat matters more in February than it does in July.
At the center of the hot room, an IKI Original Plus vented through a Harvia stainless chimney. The stone column carries up around the flue, so the mass is working above the firebox as well as around it. You build the fire yourself, and the stones hold that heat long after the last log has burned down — slower to arrive than electric, and much slower to leave. Two straight benches seat four to six. Through the windows, the woods; in winter, snow coming down while you sit in the heat of a fire you lit.
Inside, thermo-aspen and a cedar floor. Outside, a weathered cedar finish — the boards are meant to silver, and the finish takes them there evenly instead of letting them grey in patches, so the cabin settles a little further into the treeline every season it stands there.
