Thirty-eight feet of charred black cladding in a birch grove in Hope, Maine, lifted clear of the ground on piers. Two volumes under one standing seam roof, and between them an open breezeway you can walk straight through — deck boards running out the far side, birches framed at the end of it. The building doesn't sit on the site so much as cut a doorway into it.
It isn't a sauna building. A studio with a kitchen and a bathroom at one end, the hot room at the other, a storeroom behind that, and the breezeway holding the two apart. An outdoor shower stands in the breezeway. Eight hundred and thirty-six square feet all told, deck included.
The hot room runs about nine and a half feet — sized to heat properly rather than to fill out the plan. Thermo-aspen on the walls and on the benches. An IKI Original Plus stands against the glass, so the fire is the first thing you see coming across the deck, and the window beside it drops nearly to floor level: from the bench you look level into the birches and the meadow past them.
Behind the stove wall is the storeroom, and the way in is the detail worth finding. The door sits flush with the cladding — no frame, no visible hinge, just a recessed pull in the black boards. You don't see a door there until you need one.
The cladding is Thermory Ignite, brushed — charred rather than stained, so the black is in the wood instead of on it. Decking in Thermory Kodiak spruce, left to weather pale against it. The windows are triple-glazed Schüco; the drawings asked for R-5 to R-8 and this went well past that. Painted gypsum through the studio, heating and cooling on a mini split.
Built to an architect's plan rather than one of ours — a Hereabout Cabin Build Set, adapted for the site. The work here was the execution: framing, envelope, cladding, sauna, and the details that never appear on a drawing.
